European Union officials believe that the Trump administration's demands for additional concessions are disproportionate and could threaten the recent trade agreement that averted a full-blown trade war.
Informed sources told Bloomberg that the US administration sent a new proposal to the EU this month to implement some provisions that Washington described as the path to fair and balanced trade.
The sources added that these demands fall within the framework of the agreement reached in July, under which the United States imposed 15% tariffs on most European goods entering US markets.
Although details of the new proposals have not been disclosed, officials in Brussels believe that the US demands go beyond what was agreed upon and impose significant obligations on EU countries. They are scheduled to be presented to member state representatives during Wednesday's meeting.
The sources added that the United States is seeking to open a discussion on EU legislation in the areas of technology, corporate tax compliance, and climate regulations, issues that Brussels considers red lines that impinge on its independence
