Mexico plans to increase tariffs on imports from China

The Mexican government plans to increase tariffs on China as part of next year's budget proposal to protect local businesses from cheap imports.

The higher tariffs expected could include imports of automobiles, textiles, and plastics, to protect Mexican manufacturers from subsidized Chinese competition.

However, according to Bloomberg, the plan may change, and a draft revenue proposal is scheduled to be sent to Congress by September 8.

This comes as the Trump administration has urged Mexican officials to raise tariffs on Chinese imports. Mexico has subsequently proposed the idea of a "Fortress North America" that would restrict Chinese shipments and strengthen trade and industrial ties between the United States, Mexico, and Canada
