US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Canadian imports to 35% effective August 1, citing Ottawa's retaliation with tariffs against Washington.
Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform, addressing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney: "Instead of cooperating with the United States, Canada responded with its own tariffs." He added: "If Canada cooperates with me to stop the flow of fentanyl, we may consider amending this message."
Carney responded in a post on X: "Canada has made vital progress in stopping the flow of fentanyl into North America, and we are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in our country."
He explained that the 35% tariff would be separate from all sectoral tariffs, warning that it could increase further if Canada continues to take retaliatory action.
Canada is subject to 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, 25% on automobiles, and faces a 50% tariff on copper shipments starting August 1.
Trump stated on Thursday: "If for any reason you decide to raise your tariffs, whatever amount you choose will be added to the 35% we impose, and goods reshipped to evade these tariffs will be subject to those higher tariffs
