Qatar Energy nears commissioning of its Texas LNG terminal

The Golden Pass LNG project in Texas, jointly owned by Qatar Energy and ExxonMobil, is preparing to cool key equipment as it nears startup after months of delays.

The facility has purchased a cargo known as a "cooler cargo" for delivery in October or November, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Gas must be chilled to -260°F (-162°C) to be liquefied, and LNG export projects often import a pre-commissioning cargo to lower the facility's temperature.

Startup Approaching

The timing of the start-up at the facility, one of the largest to come online and representing a new wave of LNG supply, is being closely watched, especially after it was delayed last year.

The start-up, which will cement America's position as the world's largest LNG exporter, is also expected to help lower prices in Europe and Asia.

A Golden Pass spokesperson stated that the facility has entered the commissioning and testing phase for Train 1, and is expected to receive the refrigerant shipment during the fourth quarter of this year.

The Golden Pass facility, formerly a gas import terminal, will have an export capacity of approximately 18 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. Construction of the export infrastructure began in 2019, and operations were scheduled for 2024
